The Cathedral’s Birthday

The Brinkley Communion Cup

This chalice is but one glimpse of history to be shared this Sunday.

The following is inscribed on the base of the chalice:

In Memoriam Elizabeth Mhoon Brinkley October 14, 1828 to Oct. 13, 1890.

Lord I have loved the habitation of thy house and the place where thine honor dwelleth.

In Memoriam of Robert Campbell Brinkley
May 28, 1816 to November 28, 1818.

I thank my God for every remembrance of you.

Special Display and Festive Reception

Sunday, May 21 • 11 am

165 years ago, Bishop James H. Otey consecrated St. Mary’s, commissioning the new church “to spread the gospel in the valley of the Mississippi . . . even unto the river.” The date was Ascension Day, May 13, 1858.

This year we are celebrating this occasion on the Sunday after Ascension Day, or Sunday, May 21, with a display of historic artifacts and more showing off just a bit of our history. Join us in Martyrs Hall after the 10 am service for this display and a special reception.

Note: as we’re still under construction in the Nave, please enter from Poplar Avenue either through the Sisters Chapel or through the courtyard outside Martyrs Hall.
